The city of HVAR- is situated on the south-west coast of the island in a beutifull bay protected by Pakleni otoci. It is an admistrative and cultural center of Hvar and one of a popular destinations for holidaymakers. The municipality has population of about 4.000 inhabitants making it the largest settlement on the island of Hvar. The city is a popular port for yachts sailing around the Adriatic, especially in the summer months. There are regular catamaran ferry services from the port between Hvar and Split, as well as with nearby islands: Brac, Korcula, Lastovo and Vis. Ferry connection is enabled from Split via Stari Grad|island Hvar twice a day; during the season there is a direct ferry connection with Pescara and Stari Grad|island Hvar.
Hvar town enjoys a sunny Mediterranean climate, typical of the southern Adriatic, with mild wet winters and hot dry summers. For the months of June to September, the average temperature is higher than 20 °C, dropping below 10 °C in just two months of the year (January and February). During the summer, the westerly maestral wind blows through the Pakleni channel, providing welcome cooling during the day. Rain is rare here during spring and summer, though plentiful in autumn and winter months. Snow occurs on average once every ten years.The average monthly temperature of the sea, from June through October, is 20 °C. It is not unusual for the sea temperature to reach more than 27 °C. The sea is always warmer than the air, except during the summer months. The current usually comes from the south-east.
As one of the earliest "tourist boards" in Europe, it was founded in 1868. with the purpose of providing "good care for visitors". Today, the city has a variety of hotels, villas and apartments for rent, galleries, museums, and exhibitions, including the Arsenal, Loggia, the Croatian Institute, and the Hvar Heritage Museum with its art and archaeological collections.

Hvar town is a protected Cultural Heritage area, as are the rural areas of Velo Grablje, Malo Grablje and Zaraće. In addition, there are five archaeological sites in the area: the hydro-archaeological site of Palmižana, villa rustica Soline, the prehistoric site of Vira, and the prehistoric Lompić fort in the Gračišće Bay.
One of the strengths of Hvar Island as a tourist destination is the diversity of activities to suit every wallet and energy level. There are excellent local tourist agencies offering an imaginative range of activities for tourists including sailing and sea kayaking packages for water enthusiasts, as well as hiking, cycling and rock climbing for land-based customers. The combination of climate, vistas and tranquility make Hvar an ideal location for yoga and meditation, and some of the best programmes are offered by a boutique holistic yoga centre in the inland village of Dol. One of Hvar's great attractions is also one of its cheapest - the island has an enviable selection of stunning beaches, many of which are within easy walk of the main tourist resorts. A little more exploring will reveal hidden coves, one of the reasons that Hvar is a major destination for naturists.
