Vela Stiniva

The north-east side of island Hvar is sparsely populated and only two towns are located by the sea on that side: Jelsa and Vrboska. There are several villages higher in the hills: Poljica, Humac, Zastražišće...In the past, residents of this villages were building only fishing houses by the sea. That's why you will find beautiful coves by the sea with several houses that are in nowadays used as apartments for rent.

Vela Stiniva nad Mala Stiniva are such areas where everyone should find quiet corner for the true relaxation. Mala Stiniva is especially known by the picturesque cliffs which vertically descend into the azure blue sea creating a unique scene. The slightly bigger cove Vela Stiniva is known for its countryside house Duboković - Nadalini from the 18th century which represents our rural Baroque as well for its numerous trails for free climing. There is no more then dozzen houses here and one small restaurant., small pier and protected harbour. You can find accommodation in a few apartments or rooms. Beach is pebble, with a shallow waters. Still you can see fishing boats arriving into the bay. At the bottom of the bay there is old, small St.Antony church where the holly mass is spoken only on saint's day, June, the 13th. The nearest market is in Zastrazisce, 2 kilometers far.
Vela Stiniva is one of the super-crags of the Island, featuring two main sectors – one for hard climbing and one for easy and beginner climbing. The crag is at sea level and from the main sector you can literarily jump in to the Adriatic. The main hard-climbing sector is located on the west side of the cove, featuring a large cave and slight overhangs around it, including some superb terrain for belaying and chilling. You can come to Vela Stiniva by boat from Jelsa or Vrboska as well by the road from two directions: a/ Starigrad/Hvar/Jelsa and other places on the west side of the island, just take the road to Sućuraj and some 15km from Jelsa you will see a sign for Vela Stiniva; b/ if you are coming from Sućuraj or other places on the east side, or you are taking an express 25min ferry from Drvenik (near Makarska on the mainland), just carry on towards Jelsa for 30km and the same sign appears on the right side. The roads on the east side of the are hard, so drive carefully .
